Ingredients of Amaranthus Dal/Thotakura Pappu

  1. You need 2 tbsp of Toor Dal.

  2. You need 2 tbsp of Masoor Dal.

  3. You need 2 tbsp of Moong Dal.

  4. You need 1 tbsp of Chana Dal.

  5. You need 1 tbsp of Udad dal.

  6. Prepare 1 bunch of Amaranthus.

  7. You need 1 of large tomato (finely chopped).

  8. It’s 2 of green chillies slit lengthwise.

  9. You need 1 of lemon sized ball tamarind.

  10. You need 1/2 tsp of haldi.

  11. You need 1 tsp of ghee.

  12. Prepare Pinch of asafoetida.

  13. It’s 1/2 tsp of jeera.

  14. You need 1/2 tsp of Mustard seeds.

  15. You need 1/2 tsp of Methi.

  16. You need 1 of spring Curry leaves.

  17. It’s 2 tbsp of Dhania leaves finely chopped.

Heat oil in a pan; add red chilli, channa dal, cumin & mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.

Amaranthus Dal/Thotakura Pappu step by step

  1. Wash clean and cut the amaranthus, tomatoes and chillies..

  2. Wash all the dals together two times. Add them to the pressure cooker with 3 cups water and 1/2 tsp haldi. Add tomatoes, greens and chillies to it. Cook till one whistle. Them simmer until there are another 2 whistles..

  3. Let the cooker cool on its own. Now mash the dal well with a rasam spoon..

  4. Heat the tamarind in water. After it cools squeeze it with your hands and remove all the pulp and juice..

  5. Heat the ghee, add the mustard seeds. After they crackle add the jeera, methi seeds and Hong in that order. Then add the tamarind juice..

  6. Simmer it for 2 minutes for the tamarind to loose the raw smell. Now add the mashed Dal and mix well. Add salt and chilli powder as needed..

  7. Add the curry leaves and simmer for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve πŸ˜‹.

Add green chillies and onion; cook till onions are soft.

Add soaked moong dal and cook till dal is almost done.

Add the turmeric pwd and salt and combine.
