Recipe: Eating on a Dime Fish Dum Biryani Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Fish Dum Biryani. This Fish Biryani is a perfect start and you will love how well the fish blends with the flavorful rice and masala. Oh, the aroma of Fish Dum Biryani is so heavenly that it makes everyone drool in our household! Whenever I prepare Fish Biryani, I make sure to prepare extra so that it can be packed for my kiddo's and my husband's lunch as well.

Biryani is most commonly made with chicken or mutton.

However I made this biryani with fish few years ago for a weekend dinner & was surprised at how delicious it turned out.

Fish dum biryani is a spicy, flavorful and delicious biryani prepared by layering fried fish on a layer of onion tomato masala mixture and finally put to dum with a layer of basmati rice and cooked to perfection.

Ingredients of Fish Dum Biryani

  1. It’s 5-6 pieces of Rohu fish.

  2. You need 1-2 of potatoes, boiled & cubed.

  3. It’s 1 1/2 cups of rice, soaked in water for 30 minutes.

  4. You need 1" of cinnamon stick.

  5. Prepare 2-3 of green cardamoms.

  6. It’s 5-6 of cloves.

  7. You need 1-2 of bay leaves.

  8. It’s 3 tbsp. of oil.

  9. Prepare 1 tbsp. of ginger-garlic paste.

  10. You need 1 tsp. of tomato paste / 1 tomato, chopped.

  11. You need 1 of onion, chopped.

  12. You need 1/2 tsp. of turmeric powder.

  13. It’s 1 tbsp. of roasted coriander-cumin powder.

  14. You need handful of coriander & mint leaves, chopped.

  15. It’s 1/2 cup of fried onions.

  16. You need 1 tbsp. of red chilli powder.

  17. It’s 4-5 of fresh red / green chilies, slit.

  18. You need 1 tsp. of rose / kewra water.

  19. You need 1 tsp. of garam masala powder.

  20. You need pinch of saffron soaked in 1/2 cup milk.

  21. You need 1 tsp. of lime juice.

  22. It’s 2-3 tbsp. of ghee.

We usually make biryani with chicken/ shrimp but due to lockdown we are not out frequently so though to make use of the frozen boneless fish at home and made.

Fish Dum biryani is prepared with Fried King fish by layering them in cooked Basmati Rice along with Saffron Milk and other herbs.

Fish Biryani is a delicious various form the other non- veg Dum biryani's.

Fish Dum Biryani step by step

  1. Marinate the fish and the potatoes separately with a pinch of salt and turmeric powder for 10 minutes..

  2. To prepare the rice - Bring sufficient water to boil along with salt, bay leaves, cinnamon, cardamoms and cloves. Add the rice and simmer till it is almost done (al dente). Drain and keep aside..

  3. Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces on both sides till golden in colour. Drain and keep aside..

  4. In the same oil, fry the potatoes till light golden in colour. Drain and keep aside. In the same oil saute the onion till light brown..

  5. Now add the ginger-garlic paste, tomato paste and all the dry spices mixed with a little water. Fry on a medium flame till the oil separates..

  6. Add 1 cup water and bring it to a boil. Gently drop in the fish and cover. Simmer by carefully flipping it over halfway and till the gravy is reduced. When done, carefully remove the fish pieces and keep them separately..

  7. To assemble - In a heavy-bottomed broad pan add 1 tsp. oil and sprinkle some water. (This will prevent the Biryani from sticking at the bottom). Layer half of the rice first..

  8. Then add the gravy, fried potatoes, half of the mint-coriander leaves, half of the slit chilies and half of the fried onion. Spread the remaining rice over it, followed by the fish pieces, remaining mint-coriander leaves, chilies and fried onion..

  9. Drizzle the saffron milk, ghee and rose water. Cover and cook on dum for 10-12 minutes by placing the pan on a heated Tawa / griddle. When done, garnish with coriander leaves and a dash of lime. Serve with raita..

If preferred you can always increase the amount of gravy and ghee in the recipe..
