The 'Dalna' in Bengali Cooking is a gravy dish where the gravy is thicker and richer where in a 'Jhol' the gravy is soupy and runny.

Prepare 6-7 pieces of medium sized prawns.

Prepare 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder (for marination).

You need 1/4 tsp of salt (for marination).

You need 1 of medium sized potato, cut into small cubes.

It’s 2 tsp of mustard oil.

Prepare To taste of Salt to taste (for gravy).

Aloo Chingri Dalna (Bengali Style Prawn Recipe with Potato) instructions

Remove all the shells from the prawns, devain them, clean them thoroughly and then marinate them with salt & turmeric powder.

Take the oil in a microwave safe bowl & put it inside the microwave. Heat the oil at high power for 1 minute.

Then add the bay leaf and cumin seeds into the oil and put the bowl back into the microwave & heat it at high power for 1 minute.

Then add the potatoes, cover the bowl & microwave it at high power for 3-4 minutes.

Now add the prawns, cover again and microwave for 3 minutes.

Then remove the bowl & add the tomato paste.

Add the turmeric powder & salt.

Then add the cumin powder & red chilli powder.

Mix everything very well, then put the bowl inside the microwave and microwave it for 2 minutes.

After that remove the bowl & stir everything well.

Now pour some water to make a thin gravy or in Bengali we call it as jhol'.

Then put the bowl into the microwave & cook it uncovered for 1 minute.

Then cover the bowl & microwave it for another couple of minutes.

Lastly mix the garam masala powder & chopped coriander leaves with the dalna & its ready to serve.

Serve the dalna' with steaming hot rice.
The curry also contains pumpkin (kumro) and potatoes in chunky cubes, which get juicy with the flavourful jhol.
This is a Bengali-style dalna (curry), so it contains the usual suspects—whole garam masala.
Add water in between to adjust the level of curry.
Aloo Chingrir Shorshe bata diye Jhal is typically served with the curry on the thinner side.
However, you may adjust the level based on your preference.
