Sama ki khichdi (Moriya). Sama ki khichdi or moraiyo/mordhan khichdi is usually made on Navratri fasting or Ekadashi fasting or other Hindu fasting. Sama is also known as Moraiyo/moraiya, mordhan, vari, varai, samak, samvat, vrat ke chawal and in English known as Barnyard millet. Sama ki Khichdi, also known as Moraiyo Khichdi, is usually made during fasting days like Sharavan, Ekadashi or Navratri.

Sama ki khichdi or vrat ki khichdi is usually made on Navrarti or Ekadashi fasting days.

Sama is a small grain which is round in texture and gluten free.

You can have Sama ki khichdi (Moriya) using 11 ingredients and 13 steps. Here is how you cook it.

Ingredients of Sama ki khichdi (Moriya)

  1. You need 1 cup (240 ml) of sama ke chawal(Moraiyo).

  2. It’s 1 tbsp of oil/ghee.

  3. You need 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds.

  4. It’s 2 tbsp of peanuts.

  5. It’s 1 of potatoes peeled and chopped.

  6. It’s to taste of Sendha namak (rock salt).

  7. Prepare 11/3 cups of water.

  8. It’s 1/2 tsp of lemon juice.

  9. You need leaves of Finely chopped coriander.

  10. Prepare 2 of green chill finely chopped.

  11. Prepare 7-8 of curry leaves.

Samak is also known as moriyo, mordhan, vari, varai, sama, samvar or vrat ke chawal.

It is known as barnyard millet in English.

Today we are going to prepare Mordhan or Sama / Moraiyo ki khichdi.

It is one of the popular Indian recipes prepared during Hindu fasting.

Sama ki khichdi (Moriya) instructions

  1. Wash moraiya and soak for 10 minutes. Then discard the water..

  2. Heat the oil in a pan once hot add cumin seeds and let them sizzle..

  3. Then fry peanuts for a minute or till it gets light brown in colour..

  4. Add chopped green chillies and fry for few seconds..

  5. Add cubed potatoes with sendha namak..

  6. Then add soaked moriya and mix and cook for a minute..

  7. Add water and bring it to a boil.If you like the consistency little loose increase the quantity of water..

  8. Once start boiling cover the pan and lower the heat to low..

  9. Let it cook for 17 minutes. After that open the lid..

  10. Fluff up the sama rice using spoon or fork.Squeeze fresh lemon juice..

  11. Add chopped coriander leaves and mix in..

  12. Serve with rajgira kadhi or singhare ki kadhi or it can be served with plain yogurt or farali raita..

  13. It is filling, nutritions and delicious..
