Ada Hengu Khechudi/ Oriya khichadi. Ada Hengu Khechudi is a Temple food where the Rice is flavored by aromatic Ginger and Asafoetida to be served as accompaniment of Dalma. Ada Hengu Khechudi which is a lovely combination for lunch is made available in the Jagannath Temple, Puri during the month of Pausha i.e. Mid December to Mid January every Year.

It is usually served with Dalma (a mixed vegetable and lent.

This khechudi is served as prasad in the famous temple of Lord Jagannath in Orissa.

The rice is flavoured with just grated ginger and asafoetida.

Ingredients of Ada Hengu Khechudi/ Oriya khichadi

  1. It’s 1 cup of govindbhog rice.

  2. It’s 1 cup of yellow moong dal.

  3. It’s 2 Tbsp of ghee.

  4. Prepare 2 of small bay leaves.

  5. You need 1/2 tsp of asafoetida.

  6. Prepare 1 Tbsp of finely grated/ chopped ginger.

  7. You need 1-2 of green chillies, south lengthwise.

  8. You need to taste of Salt.

  9. It’s 1 Tbsp of ghee for garnishing.

Ada Hengu Khechudi/ Oriya khichadi step by step

  1. Clean and wash the rice and moong dal well. Soak them separately for 2 hours. Place in a colander and let the excess water drain out..

  2. Heat 2 Tbsp ghee in a pressure cooker. Add bay leaves, asafoetida, ginger and slit green chillies. Saute for few seconds, taking care that they dont burn..

  3. Now add the soaked and drained rice and dal into the ghee tadka in the cooker. Mix well. Saute for 30 seconds..

  4. Now add 3 cups of water and salt. Mix well. Close the pressure cooker with whistle on and cook till 4 whistles. Switch off flame..

  5. Let the pressure release naturally. Open the cooker and gently fluff up the khechudi..

  6. Serve the khechudi hot. Pour 1 Tbsp ghee on hot khechudi. Divine!! 🙏.

This delicious gravy can be serve with steamed rice or with roti or paratha.
