Recipe: Eating on a Dime Idiyappam Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Idiyappam. Idiyappam (Malayalam: ഇടിയപ്പം, Tamil: இடியாப்பம்), also known as string hopper, nool puttu (Malayalam: നൂൽപ്പുട്ട്, Tamil: நூல்புட்டு), or noolappam (Malayalam: നൂലപ്പം), is a rice noodle dish originating from the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and as well as from Sri Lanka. Idiyappam is easy to make provided you follow a few helpful points and you will get soft idiyappam. I have mentioned all the points in the step by step pics.

Idiyappam is an all time favorite recipe at home.

Serve it with sweet coconut milk and stew and it makes for a fantastic breakfast or dinner.

You can also serve with Chicken Stew.

Ingredients of Idiyappam

  1. You need of Rice flour.

  2. Prepare of Hot water for kneading.

  3. You need of salt.

  4. Prepare of oil.

Idiyappam is also called as Nool Puttu in Karnataka and String Hoppers in Srilanka.

I cannot say enough about the cuisine of Kerala, God's own country.

I absolutely relish the traditional food recipes of Kerala especially their breakfast fare like Idiyappam, Puttu and Appam.

Idiyappam step by step

  1. First take a pan and roast the rice flour, till the flour is very hot to touch. Remove and set aside..

  2. Take a pan and add in 1.5 cups of water and allow it to boil..

  3. Take a idly cooker/ Streamer add in some 2 small cups of water and allow it to boil..

  4. Now add salt and oil to the roasted rice flour. Mix well Add hot water slowly, with the help of spatula mix the flour well. Add water little by little and make it as tight dough. Adjust water as per the rice flour..

  5. Prepare small oblong balls and load it in the idiyappam press. Grease the idli plate with little oil. Press the idiyappam strings onto idly plate. Once the dough is pressed, transfer the plate to a steamer and steam the idiyappam for 10 mins. After 10 mins of steaming, rest the idli plates for 5 minutes before removing the idiyappam. Serve idiyappam with sweet coconut milk..
