  1. Prepare 100 g of rava / semolina.

  2. You need 1 of beetroot peeled and grated.

  3. Prepare 1 of onion chopped.

  4. Prepare 2 of green chillies chopped.

  5. You need 1/2 tsp of grated ginger.

  6. Prepare 1 sprig of curry leaves.

  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp of panch phoron / five spices (cumin,fenugreek,fennel.nigella,mustard).

  8. You need 1 pinch of turmeic powder.

  9. It’s To taste of salt.

  10. It’s 2 tbsp of oil.

  11. You need 1 tsp of ghee.

  12. You need 200 ml of water.

Kerala Style Rava Uppumavu (Semolina Upma) is not very moist, but a dry form without sticking together - a grainy structure.

In Kerala most of us don't add vegetables like green peas, beans and carrot pieces like usual South Indian Upma.

But when I make upma I use finely chopped carrots and coconut which makes upma very yummy, it's optional.

Upma is one of the most easiest breakfast and can be done in a jiffy.

Beetroot Rava Upma instructions

  1. Heat a pan and dry roast rava for 2 minutes. Keep it aside..

  2. Heat oil in a wok and add panch phoron. Once its spluttered add chopped onion. Saute till light brown. Then add ginger, green chilli, curry leaves and and saute for few seconds..

  3. Next add beetroot, turmeric powder, salt and fry it for 1 minute. Add water and cover it..

  4. When water starts to boil add roasted rava slowly and stir continuously till water is absorbed. Reduce the flame and add ghee. Mix it well and turn off the flame..

  5. Cover it for some time. Then transfer it to a serving plate and serve with curd, sambar or coconut chutney..

Though I have posted many types of upma including vegetable rava upma, I realized that I did not post the most basic upma recipe (without any vegetables).

Since it is a very basic recipe, I have given step wise pictures to make it easier for beginners.
