Chitau Pitha with Coconut(Appam). Chitau pitha are really healthy and can be made at home with very little oil or ghee. I prefer to eat Chitau pitha for breakfast with Milk. These Chitau pitha bear a resemblance to appams of Southern India.

This Pitha makes its appearance in the Odia homes on the occasion of Chitalagi Amabasya, also known as Chitau Amabasya.

Basic ingredients are rice and coconut.

Tastes nice if served with chutney or khir (khiri).

You can have Chitau Pitha with Coconut(Appam) using 7 ingredients and 12 steps. Here is how you achieve it.

Ingredients of Chitau Pitha with Coconut(Appam)

  1. It’s 1 cup of rice.

  2. It’s 1 cup of grated coconut.

  3. It’s 1 cup of milk.

  4. It’s 8 tsp of ghee.

  5. Prepare 1/2 tsp of baking powder.

  6. Prepare 2 tsp of sugar.

  7. It’s to taste of Salt.

It is also popular in Tamil Nadu and Odisha where it is called Chitau Pitha.

Versions of Appam exist in Sri Lanka as well, where it is referred to as Appa in Sinhala.

The anglicised name of the Appam is Hoppers.

How to make Nadia Chitau Pitha.

Chitau Pitha with Coconut(Appam) instructions

  1. Soak the rice for about 4 hours..

  2. Grind together the soaked rice, milk & grated coconut with a little water to make a smooth paste. Add baking powder & let it ferment in a warm place.,(the consistency of the batter should be watery)..

  3. Add salt & sugar- note we do not add salt in the previous stage because it would demote the fermentation process..

  4. Check for the consistency,if the batter is too thick then add water little by little..

  5. Preheat the kadai/frypan with 1/2tsp ghee..

  6. After the kadai is heated scoop a ladle full of the mixture & pour in the centre..

  7. Cover the kadai/frying pan with a lid. Cover the side of the lid with a wet cloth..

  8. Cook it in a low medium flame..

  9. After few minutes remove it from flame, no need to flip the upper portion of the pitha/appam..

  10. Serve with kheer..

  11. Enjoy the odiya delicacy..

Grate the coconut and keep it aside.

Grind the drained rice with grated coconut with just.

Make a fine paste of coconut and rice.

Add water to make a thin batter out of it.

Heat oil in a tawa, pour some batter into it, and cover it.
