Recipe: To Try At Home Asaro/ Yam Porridge Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Asaro/ Yam Porridge. Yam pottage/Yam Porridge (Asaro) Recipe - Asaro which is also known as Yam pottage or Yam porridge is a very delicious Yam recipe though it's eaten by most tribes in Nigeria but it's more common in the Yoruba speaking parts of Nigeria. Yam porridge or Asaro is another delicious Nigerian yam dish cooked in a well-seasoned pepper mix until soft and fluffy with some yam chunks. It is very quick and easy to make.

Though this largely depends on the yam.

But generally yam gets done pretty quick.

You can have Asaro/ Yam Porridge using 16 ingredients and 12 steps. Here is how you achieve it.

Ingredients of Asaro/ Yam Porridge

  1. You need 1 of medium size yam tuber.

  2. You need of Blended scotch bonnet and onion.

  3. You need 1 of satchet tomato paste.

  4. It’s 2 of garlic cloves.

  5. You need of Ground crayfish.

  6. Prepare 3 of seeds calabar nutmeg.

  7. Prepare 1 sachet of onga classic seasoning.

  8. Prepare of Black pepper.

  9. It’s cubes of Seasoning.

  10. It’s Pinch of salt.

  11. It’s of Veg oil as required.

  12. It’s of Palm oil as required.

  13. It’s 1 of mackerel fish.

  14. Prepare 1 of lemon.

  15. Prepare of Water as required.

  16. You need Bunch of spinach (chopped).

I used dried fish (because that was the taste I wanted) in this recipe but it totally optional it can be cooked without any protein or add any protein of your choice.

Porridge yam is one of the most delicious foods in Nigeria.

Although it's mostly known as a porridge one could compare it more to mashed potatoes.

Instead of just serving plane mashed yam add all these delicious species and ingredients to come up with this delicious dish that originally comes from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, but is now. "Asaro", as it is called in Yoruba, is a yam porridge.

Asaro/ Yam Porridge instructions

  1. Cut and wash the fish with 1 lemon juice. Rinse and pat dry.

  2. Heat vegetable oil in a pan. Season and fry the fish. Drain and set aside.

  3. Add same veg. oil in a cooking pot mix with little palm oil if you desire. Add the crushed garlic fry till fragnant and add your blended pepper mixture. Fry for few minutes.

  4. Add tomato paste and fry.

  5. Add your seasonings and spices. Fry for 3 min.

  6. Add your stock or water enough to cook the yam.

  7. Add ground crayfish cover pot and bring to boil.

  8. Now, add your washed diced yams to the boiling pot and cook till soft or tender.

  9. De bone your fish and add.

  10. Finally add your chopped vegetable. Adjust salt and seasoning if necessary. Mash the yams to your preference. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 3min.

  11. Serve hot and enjoy your plate of goodness.

  12. Note: you can add any protein of choice, like offals or kpomo. You can as well use other vegetables like pumpkin leaves, parsley, moringa, curry leaves or scent leaves. You can as well serve with friend plantain if you wish or eat as it is. Enjoy!.

The yam is cooked with ingredients, resulting in a thick or soupy dish.
