Pudina Chana dal chutney (Mint and lentil dip). Tempering the pudina chutney : Heat Indian sesame oil in a pan and add in the mustard seeds and urad dal. Add in the curry leaves and dried red chillies. Add the tempering to the pudina chutney.

This dal pudina chutney is a good accompaniment for chapatti, poori, dosa, uttapam, idli etc.

I am using roasted chana dal to thicken the chutney.

Coriander leaves, garlic and ginger is used to bring down the strong aroma of mint.

Pudina Chutney is a flavourful Chutney with heat from the spices and chillies, tang from the tamarind and sweet notes from the jaggery.

Pudina is slightly roasted in the pan and then ground along with other toasted ingredients like coconut , coriander seeds, urad dal and chillies.  There are many versions of Pudina Chutney or Mint Chutney across India.

Pudina Chana dal chutney (Mint and lentil dip) step by step

  1. Heat oil in a pan and roast chana dal, red chilli and shallot for 2 minutes in medium heat.

  2. Add pudina leaves, curry leaves, grated coconut, roasted dal and saute for 2 more minutes.

  3. Add tamarind paste, salt and grind to a smooth paste.

  4. Season with oil, mustard and curry leaves.

  5. Serve with idli / dosa.
