Kottayam fish curry recipe which is also called as Meen Mulakittathu is a very simple recipe using fish tamarind. only very few ingredients are used to make a delicious Kerala Kottayam style meen curry. When we talk about the fish curries, there are so many variants of the curry made across different regions of Kerala. As the names suggest, Meen Mulakkitathu is a basic fish curry that is cooked with kudum puli (Malabar Tamrind) and red chili powder.

Tried it and everyone loved the fish curry.

I used the sardines in the tin but came out so tasty.

Love the addition of fenugreek seed powder.

Ingredients of Kottayam Fish Curry || Meen Mulakittathu

  1. It’s of Fish -3/4kg(preferably king fish/Seer Fish/Vanjaram).

  2. Prepare 2 of big piece kudam puli.

  3. Prepare 1 of big piece Ginger.

  4. Prepare of Garlic-4.

  5. Prepare of Curry leaves-2 strings.

  6. Prepare of Green Chilli-4(slits).

  7. Prepare of Salt-2tsp.

  8. You need of Water-3cups.

  9. Prepare of Chilli Powder-2tbsp.

  10. It’s of Turmeric powder-1/2tsp.

  11. It’s 1/4 tsp of Fenugreek powder.

  12. You need of Mustard seeds-1/4tsp.

  13. It’s of Fenugreek seeds-10.

  14. Prepare of Dry red chilli-2 (slits).

  15. Prepare tbsps of Coconut Oil-3.

In general, Kottayam Fish Curry (Meen Curry) tastes better next day when all the spices are absorbed by the fish.

The small onions are used to enhance the taste of the curry.

Kottayam Fish Curry || Meen Mulakittathu step by step

  1. Clean and wash fish. Cut into medium pieces..

  2. Heat manchatty(earthernware pot/mud pot) and add coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds,fenugreek seeds and dry red chilli along with curry leaves.. Then add thin long slices of ginger,garlic and green chilli…

  3. Saute for 1 minute and lower the heat. Make a paste of chilli powder,turmeric powder and fenugreek powder with little water. Add the paste to the manchatty. Saute until the raw smell goes..

  4. Then pour hot water and add salt.. Then add kudam puli and boil well..

Finally add fish and cook for about 20 minutes in medium heat.

  1. Check the salt. Allow to cool for sometime.. It will be more good if it sits for bit long.

Serve with kappa (Tapioca Curry)..
