Ambaade Ki Khatti Daal. The word 'khatti' translates to 'sour' in english. So the Exact translation of 'Khatti dal' will be 'sour lentils'. although the dal has sour taste but it is delicious and thats why I am posting it on the blog. The dal is cooked first till the desired consistency and then tempered.
AMBHADE KI BHAJI CHANA DAAL RECIPE. 'Khatti' is a term used in hindi or urdu for the english term 'sour' and hence called as khatti dal as the dal gives a slight tangy taste and is a soupy kind of dal.
Here in this recipe I am making the khatti dal using 'toovar dal' but it can also be replaced with 'masoor dal' and the recipe procedure to be followed is the same.

Ingredients of Ambaade Ki Khatti Daal

You need 1 cup of Red Lentils or Masoor.

It’s 3/4 cup of Pigeon Pea Lentils or Toor.

It’s 1 tsp of Ginger garlic paste.

Prepare 1 tbsp of Red chilli powder.

You need 1/2 tsp of Turmeric powder.

It’s 6-7 of Tomatoes chopped.

It’s 3-4 of Green Chillies slit.

It’s 2 Sprigs of Curry Leaves.

Prepare 5-6 of small bunches Sorrel Leaves.

Prepare 1 cup of Tamarind water.

You need of FOR THE TEMPERING -.

You need 2 tbsp of Oil.

You need 3-4 of Dry Red chillies.

You need 1 tbsp of Cumin seeds.

You need 3-4 of Garlic cloves thinly sliced.

Prepare 1 Sprig of Curry Leaves.
This Moong masoor ki khatti dal is my version of delicious dal recipe adapted from the Hyderabadi cuisine.
Hyderabadi khatti dal recipe is made with Arhar dal/ yellow pigeon pea.
Served with Jeera rice or cumin rice this dal chawal combo tastes almost like heaven.
Dal rice is the best comfort food combo if you ask me. khatti daal kesei hoti hai hum ne to kabhi try hi nahi ki na hi kabhi taste ki hai. pehle mujhe koi bana ke khilaye us ke baad mai sochun gi ke banau ya nahi. wese mujhe daalen itni khas tasty nahi lagti lekin kuch kuch boht achi lagti hain.
Ambaade Ki Khatti Daal instructions

Soak both Dals in enough water for 3 hours. Pressure cook them with all the ingredients mentioned for 6-7 whistles on a high heat..

Add Dals, Ginger garlic paste, Red chilli and Turmeric powders, Green chillies slit, Curry Leaves and some Salt. After done, let the pressure settle down completely on its own before opening the lid..

Now add the Sorrel Leaves to it along with Tamarind water. Pressure cook this for just 2 whistles. Adjust Salt and simmer on medium high heat for 5-10 more minutes. Prepare the tempering and add to the simmering Daal. Mix well and enjoy with Boiled Rice, Shaami Kabaabs, Dum Ke Kabaabs, Hyderabadi Shikampur Kabaabs or just plain Poppadoms and Potato Chips. Garnish with some Coriander Leaves chopped. As these Sorrel Leaves are naturally tangy, use of Tamarind depends on your choice. You can add a small Lemon sized ball of it by soaking it in water for a few minutes and then squeezing out its juice. Enjoy!.
