Recipe: Eating on a Dime Tricolour RICE NOODLES or IDIYAPPAM Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Tricolour RICE NOODLES or IDIYAPPAM. Idiyappam is a Kerala dish which is also called noolappam. It is also famous in Tamil nadu. It is basically rice noodles served with sweetened coconut milk.

It is actually a breakfast recipe in Kerala.

It is too tasty and healthy too, as it is a steamed food Idiyappam is an easy breakfast recipe made with rice flour and can be served with Vegetable Kurma or sweetened coconut milk.

For making Idiyappam, you need a idiyappam press / maker.

You can cook Tricolour RICE NOODLES or IDIYAPPAM using 24 ingredients and 15 steps. Here is how you achieve that.

Ingredients of Tricolour RICE NOODLES or IDIYAPPAM

  1. Prepare 3 cups of rice flour.

  2. You need 6 cups of hot water with salt.

  3. Prepare 3 tsp of oil.

  4. You need 2 cups of coconut grated.

  5. It’s 1 cup of green peas.

  6. You need 1 cup of pumpkin.

  7. You need of Below ingredients for ChanaCurry in a giffy / Kadala curry.

  8. It’s 1 1/2 cup of Black Chickpeas/ Kadala (Soak in water for at least 8 hrs).

  9. It’s 1 inch of Ginger chopped.

  10. You need 4-5 cloves of garlic chopped.

  11. Prepare 1 cup of tomato sliced.

  12. It’s 1 cup of onion sliced.

  13. Prepare 2 of green chilli slit.

  14. You need 3/4 cup of thick coconut milk.

  15. You need 1 sprig of Curry leaves.

  16. You need 1/2 -3/4 tsp of Meat masala / Garam masala powder.

  17. Prepare To taste of Salt.

  18. Prepare 2 tbsp of Coconut flakes / thenga kothu.

  19. It’s of Water – As required.

  20. It’s of Ingredients for Dry Roast:.

  21. You need 1/2 tsp of Turmeric powder.

  22. It’s 1/2 tsp of Fennel powder.

  23. It’s 1 tbsp of Chilli powder.

  24. You need 1.5 tbsp of Coriander powder.

You need a press with small sized holes.

The idiyappam will be thin unlike noodles which is thick.

String Hoppers", an easy to make and super delicious South Indian steamed rice noodle.

Made simply from rice flour, it becomes the perfect vehicle to mop up delicious curries like Veg Kurma or enjoy it sweet along with sweetened coconut milk for breakfast / tiffin.

Tricolour RICE NOODLES or IDIYAPPAM step by step

  1. The dough combination for Idiyappam : 1 cup flour +1 ¼ cup boiling water + 1 tsp oil.

  2. As the idiyappam is made of tri-colour, I have used natural food ingredients to enhance the flavor and add colour to the rice flour. Also this is a good way to feed vegetables to fuzzy eating kids. Secondly it steamed food..

  3. For white colour idiyappam: Add salt to water and boil it..

  4. In a bowl take flour and pour the boiling water. With help of a spoon, roughly mix it to soft dough. Close it with a lid and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Always keep the dough covered either with lid or with a wet cloth all the time, to avoid the dough from drying out. If the dough is too tight, it would be difficult to press it..

  5. Then add oil and knead well until the dough becomes soft. Fill the dough into the Idiyappam mould..

  6. Boil water in the Idli steamer and spread few drops of oil on the Idle plate and.

  7. Squeeze the prepared dough slowly through the idiyappam maker / mould into idli plate and sprinkle the grated coconut over it. Squeeze some more dough on top of the coconut..

  8. And steam for 10 minutues approximate and serve with Chana Curry as side dish. Idiyappam also best accompanied with Vegetable stew.

  9. For green colour idiyappam: 1 cup of Greenpeas, cooked with little water and salt. Grind it to smooth paste. Heat the paste before adding it to the flour. Give good mix and then only add boiling water, if required. The remaining process as above. The dough consistency should be same like the white dough..

  10. For saffron colour idiyappam: 1 cup of Pumpkin, cooked with little water and salt. Grind it to smooth paste. Heat the paste before adding it to the flour. Give good mix and then only add boiling water, if required. The remaining process as above. The dough consistency should be same like the white dough..

  11. METHOD: ChanaCurry in a giffy / Kadala curry.

  12. In the pan dry roast the ingredients, until you get the spices fragrance..

  13. In a Pressure cook take some oil, add in the coconut flakes, fry until little brown then add the ginger, garlic, onions, tomatoes and salt, saute it until it turns to brown..

  14. Now add the roasted masala powder, meat masala and saute. Drop in the soaked Chana’s, coat the Chanas well with the masala. Add curry leaves and adequate water to cook. Check for salt. Allow the Chanas to cook until you hear 5 whistles..

  15. Switch off the gas and allow the pressure to release. Now add the thick coconut milk and give a good stir. Garnish with coriander leaves..

Though we are almost towards the end of January, technically, this is still the first recipe.

Idiyappam, a rice noodles also known as nool puttu or string hoppers originated from south indian states of Tamilandu & Kerala.

It's quite famous in Srilanka also.

It's one of my all time favorite breakfast and grew up eating on every sunday!!!
