Recipe: Perfect Peerkangai Kootu Ridge Gourd Curry Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Peerkangai Kootu Ridge Gourd Curry. This ridge gourd kootu is a pathiya kootu - a mild curry without any coconut or green chilies but with the goodness of ridge gourd and cumin and pepper. I prepared the tempering with ghee, but you can use oil to make it vegan and skip asafoetida to make it gluten-free. Peerkangai Kootu is an easy, wholesome South Indian Ridge Gourd Lentil Curry.

Peerkangai Kootu is one of the best and healthy dal based gravy variety which can be taken as an accompaniment for any type of kara kulambhu, rotis, chapathis or can be mixed with white rice.

This kootu is made by blending the dal and ridge gourd with a coconut mixture.

Ingredients of Peerkangai Kootu Ridge Gourd Curry

  1. You need 2 of Ridge Gourd.

  2. Prepare 1/2 cup of Bengal Gram Dal (you can also use MOONG DAL).

  3. You need 1 of Medium Size Tomato chopped.

  4. Prepare 1/2 tsp of Turmeric powder.

  5. You need 1/2 tsp of Castor oil.

  6. You need of Salt-as per your taste.

  7. You need of Water-as required.

  8. Prepare 1/2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil.

  9. You need 1/2 tsp of Mustard seeds.

  10. It’s 1/4 tsp of Cumin seeds.

  11. You need 8 of Shallots roughly chopped.

  12. You need of Curry leaves few.

  13. You need of Coriander leaves few.

  14. You need of For Grinding.

  15. You need 1/2 cup of Grated Coconut.

  16. Prepare 2 of Garlic pods.

  17. You need 4 of Green chillies.

  18. You need 1/2 tsp of Cumin seeds.

Peerkangai Kootu Ridge Gourd Curry step by step

  1. Wash and peel off the ridge gourd skin and cut into small cubes..

  2. In a pressure cooker add bengal gram dal, turmeric powder, castor oil and required water. Cover and cook for 4 whistles..

  3. When the pressure goes off open the lid and transfer it to a currypan..

  4. Place that currypan in the stove. Switch on the flame. Keep the flame in medium. Add the ridge gourd and tomato let it boil..

  5. Add the ingredients given for Grinding in a mixie. Grind to a smooth paste..

  6. Add the ground paste to the curry and salt. Mix well and add required water let it cook for 15 mins till ridge gourd gets cooked..

  7. In a tadka pan, add coconut oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, onions and curry leaves. Fry till onions becomes translucent..

  8. Then add this to the curry. Garnish with coriander leaves..

  9. Now its ready to serve with hot rice..
