Moreover, idlis are steamed and sambar contains very little.

Apart from idli, this sambar can also be served with dosa, vada and Pongal.

You can cook Idli sambar using 10 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you achieve that.

Ingredients of Idli sambar

  1. Prepare 4 bowls of rice(any)if you have grinder use ukda rice.

  2. Prepare 1 bowl of urad dal.

  3. You need 1 teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds.

  4. You need 1 bowl of Sambar_ turdal.

  5. Prepare of All veggies of sambar.

  6. It’s of Tamarind pulp.

  7. It’s of Turmeric,red chilli powder.

  8. It’s of Salt, sambar masala(i have used homemade) any brand.

  9. It’s of Chutney_ grated coconut, green chilli,coriander,cumin seeds.

  10. You need of Salt, lemon juice.

Idli sambar instructions

  1. Soak rice and urad dal for atleast 4 hours separately add some fenugreek seeds.

  2. Grind mixture and ferment it overnight by adding salt.

  3. Grease idli stand with little oil and pour batter in mould.

  4. Steam for 15 min.let it cool.

  5. Sambar_ cook tur dal.cut all veggies in cubes(onion,potato,pumpkin,brinjal,drumstick).

  6. Heat oil in kadai put fenugreek seeds,curry leaves.add veggies one by one add turmeric,red chilli powder, sambar masala let it boil till veggies cooked.

  7. Add cooked turdal salt, tamarind pulp cook for 5 more mins..

  8. Chutney grind all ingredients..

  9. Serve hot idli with sambar and chutney.

As I said this is my MIL's recipe.

Before marriage for me, sambar means, only with dal.

But this was new to me when I went to my husband's home.

This goes well with idli and dosa.

I make it almost every other week now.
