How to prepare Puttu and Kadala Curry, a popular breakfast option in Kerala.

Puttu is made by steaming rice flour along with grated coconut in a Puttu Kudam, a cylindrical container.

Kadala curry is made by cooking soaked black channa (Bengal gram) with chopped onion, spices and tomatoes.

Ingredients of Puttu with kadala curry

  1. It’s for of Masala–.

  2. You need 5-6 cloves of garlic.

  3. It’s 1 cup of chopped tomatoes.

  4. Prepare 1 tsp of fennel seeds.

  5. It’s 1 of cardamom.

  6. Prepare 1 of clove.

  7. Prepare 1 inch of ginger.

  8. It’s for of curry.

  9. You need 1/2 cup of back or white channa.

  10. You need 1 cup of sliced onions.

  11. You need 1 tsp of Chilli powder.

  12. Prepare 1 tsp of coriander powder.

  13. It’s 1 tsp of turmeric.

  14. It’s as per taste of Salt.

  15. You need 1/2 cup of coconut paste.

  16. You need 1 tsp of Chopped mint leaves.

  17. You need as per taste of Salt.

  18. It’s for of Tempering–.

  19. It’s 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds.

  20. Prepare 2-3 Strands of curry leaves.

  21. It’s 2 of dried red chillies.

  22. It’s 1 tsp of coconut oil.

  23. Prepare for of puttu–.

  24. Prepare 1 cup of rice flour.

  25. Prepare 1/4 cup of mixed millet flour.

  26. Prepare 1/4 spoon of salt water.

  27. Prepare 1/2 cup of grated coconut.

Puttu with kadala curry step by step

  1. Wash and soak the chana overnight. For masala grind all the ingredients without adding water and make a smooth paste..

  2. Take a pressure cooker and add in the sliced onions, the ground masala, soaked and drained chana, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and a cup of water. Cover and cook for 5 whistles. Remove from heat and wait for the pressure to settle..

  3. Now add the fresh coconut paste to the curry and bring it to boil for 2 mins and turn off from heat..

  4. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add in the mustard seeds, curry leaves and dried red chillies. Let the mustard seeds pop. Add it to the curry. Kadala curry is ready.

  5. For puttu mix rice flour and millet flour. Add salt water and mix to get crumble texture. Now steam the flour in the steamer for about 15mins. Settle to cool down completely..

  6. Take a puttu maker. Fill the steamed flour as layer with coconut and close the lid. Cook it for upto 10mins and serve hot with kadala curry..

  7. Note: You can use any oil but using coconut oil gives authentic taste..

I love having it with plain white rice or roti.

This dal is so delicious, it has a spicy flavour.
