Easiest Way to Quick Eating on a Dime Sweet Appam (unniappam/nei appam) Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Sweet Appam (unniappam/nei appam). Recipe for Nei Appam made during Karthigai deepam festival. Nei Appam is also called as unniyappam in Kerala. Nei appam reminds me of so many good memories.

Kerala Unniyappam Recipe/Nei Appam or Sweet Paniyaram is an easy to make instant low fat sweet appam recipe.

The batter made out of rice flour, wheat flour, jaggery & ripe banana puree, flavoured with few pinches of cardamoms is poured into a mould called "Appe Pan" in which ghee is heated & fried until deep brown.

One of Kerala's signature traditional sweet or dessert recipe, that is loved all over.

You can cook Sweet Appam (unniappam/nei appam) using 6 ingredients and 14 steps. Here is how you cook it.

Ingredients of Sweet Appam (unniappam/nei appam)

  1. You need 1 Cup of Rice (raw).

  2. You need ¾ Cup of Jaggery.

  3. It’s ½ Tablespoon of Cardamom Powder.

  4. Prepare 1 of Banana.

  5. Prepare 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Grated.

  6. Prepare of Ghee or Oil.

Presenting Neyyappam, also known as Nei Appam, Kerala Style Sweet Appam Recipe.

While there are many recipes and versions of this traditional sweet, this is a traditional recipe where Nei Appam is made with Rice that is soaked and ground into a batter.

Unniappam or Unni Appam are sweet fritters made with rice, banana, a few spices and coconut.

Unniyappam is one of those special sweets snacks from Kerala and are also served in the Onam Sadya.

Sweet Appam (unniappam/nei appam) step by step

  1. Soak rice in water for few hours. (3hrs - recommended but 1hr works).

  2. Soak jaggery in water and remove the impurities..

  3. Drain water from rice and grind it to a fine paste..

  4. Add jaggery to the paste and grind both together..

  5. Add banana and mix it in the grinder/mixie..

  6. Transfer the mix to another bowl. Add the grated coconut and cardamom powder and mix..

  7. The mixture should neither be watery or too tight. (Similar to pancake batter or dosa batter)..

  8. Keep the mix aside for over an hour. (Any less also is fine).

  9. Heat ghee/oil in a frying pan..

  10. Fill a deep spoon with the batter and pour it slowly in the oil. (Theres a special utensil called "Paniyaram Pan" for frying appams. If you find one, you can use that too.).

  11. Pour as many spoons as the pan has space for. However, each ball should almost completely immerse in the oil..

  12. Fry till both sides of an appam turn golden brown/deep brown. (Color will vary according to the type of jaggery).

  13. Serve the beautiful appams after lunch, before lunch or have it as a snack..

  14. After all this, you will notice the jaggery water thats leftover from immersing jaggery. What do you do with it? Check out "JAGGERGIN".
