Chana dal Rava Upma. Upma is a flavorful South Indian breakfast dish made from rava or cream of wheat. This traditional dish involves cooking roasted rava in water that has been flavored by ghee (or oil), cashews, urad dal (lentils), chana dal (husked chickpeas), onion, ginger and additional herbs and spices. Heat ghee, add chana dal, urad dal, mustard seeds, and saute till they change colour.
Give a good stir, cover the lid and cook on medium flame until most of the moisture is absorbed.
And the Upma which is made with semolina is called rava upma, sooji upma or suji ka upma.
The method of cooking rava (suji) upma requires dry roasting the rava.

Ingredients of Chana dal Rava Upma

It’s 1 cup of Rava-.

You need 1/2 cup of Chana dal- soaked in water.

It’s 1 of Onion finely chopped.

It’s 1 tsp of Mustard seeds.

It’s as per taste of Salt-.

Prepare -5-6 of Curry leaves.

It’s 3-4 spoons of Oil -.

It’s 1 tsp of Coriander powder.

You need 1 tsp of Garam masala.

You need 1tsp of Red chilli powder.
This roasted rava is then cooked with tempered and spiced boiling water which has some green chilies, ginger, curry leaves, cashew nuts (and / or peanuts), cumin, mustard seeds.
Remove the roasted rava on a plate and in the same pan, heat the oil or ghee.
I use a combination of both.
Add the mustard seeds and chana dal and let it fry for few seconds.

Wash and soak Chana dal in water for 20 mints then boil in pressure cooker till tender. Strain and Keep aside..

Take a pan add oil, mustard seeds and let it crackle. Add curry leaves and semolina and cook till the colour changes and aroma or roasting rava comes..

Add above-mentioned spices and mix well and add Chana dal and mix well. Add water as required and keep stirring till the batter gathers and the pan leaves the sides..

Transfer to a bowl and garnish with curry leaves. Serve hot with coconut chutney..
