Hurali bassaru/horse gram sambar. The stock is what we will be using to make the Karnataka style Hurali Saaru / Horse gram Rasam today. The lentils can be used for making a horse gram mash. Heat little Indian sesame oil in a pan and add in the fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, black pepper, coriander seeds, curry leaves, and red chillies.

Add salt and if u like a small piece of jaggery.

  21. Prepare 1 tablespoon of oil.

Once these pulses are cooked, a portion of these are ground along with coconut & spices & made into a Rasam/Saaru and the remaining portion is made into a Usli or a quick Stir fry that is served along with Rasam & Rice.

Horse gram Saaru/ Rasam and Palya/Usli/Sundal is one of my family's favorite foods.

This is a two in one dish - we will be making Rasam and and it's side dish with a common main ingredient, Horsegram.

Horse Gram is rich in minerals, especially iron, calcium and phosphorus.

  1. Cook horsegram in cooker for 5-6 whistles with salt. Separate horsegram from water..

  2. Grind the ingredients for masala in to smooth paste..

  3. Heat oil in vessel add cumin and mustard after mustard splutter add curry leaves and onions. After onions turn golden brown colour add grounded masala paste fry for couple of minutes. Add water separated from horsegram after boiling to masala..

  4. Adjust salt. Add more water if required. After sambar starts boiling keep in low flame and cook for 10 to15 minutes..

  5. For kalu oggarane heat oil in a wok add jeera and mustard after mustard splutter add curry leaves, green chillies and onions. After onions turn translucent add cooked horsegram mix well. Add grated coconut..

  6. Serve hot with ragi mudde and rice.
