This Moong Dal Idli is a no-rice, Protein-rich Idli variety. Out of all lentils Moong Dal is rich in protein and is very healthy for even babies.

Most people try making idlis at home but sometimes it fails.

The result is hard idilis which do not fluff up.

This could be because the batter does not ferment properly or the proportions of the ingredients are wrong.  You cannot go wrong with Moong Dal Idli because the proportion is equal parts of rice and equal part of moong dal with a.

You can cook Moong Dal Idli using 14 ingredients and 3 steps. Here is how you cook that.

Ingredients of Moong Dal Idli

  1. You need of Moong dal (yellow).

  2. Prepare of thick curd.

  3. You need of Oil.

  4. Prepare of Mustard seeds.

  5. It’s of Cumin seeds.

  6. It’s of Chana dal.

  7. Prepare of Finely chopped green chillies.

  8. It’s of finely chopped ginger.

  9. Prepare of curry leaves.

  10. Prepare of Chopped cashewnuts.

  11. Prepare of asafoetida.

  12. Prepare of finely chopped Coriander.

  13. You need of Salt.

  14. It’s of Eno fruit salt.

This does not need any rice.

The accompaniment for this is a "No Dal".

Sometimes I make the rava idli and on days when we are in the mood to eat sanna (Mangalorean/Goan idlies made with batter fermented with yeast) I make those or on rare occasions its the ragi idli that makes its appearance.

Moong Dal Idli step by step

  1. Soak Moong dal into the water for 3-4 hrs and then take it out from the water, put it into the grinder and make a smooth batter. Now transfer batter into the bowl, add curd, whisk it and mix well..

  2. Now take oil in a sauce pan, put mustard seeds, cumin seeds and sauté, now add Chana dal, finely green chilli, chopped ginger, curry leaves, chopped cashew and sauté until golden brown, Splutter tempering. Now add grated carrot and sauté for 2 minutes. Turns aromatic. Now put this masala in to the dal paste, add asafoetida, finely chopped coriander, salt and mix it well..

  3. Grease the Idli mould with oil. Now add Eno fruit and mix gently. Turns frothy. Moong dal batter is ready. Take paste and put it into the Idli mould. Place in the steamer and steam for 15 minutes. Let them cool down. Now demould idlis and enjoy with the Chutney:).

Now the moong dal idlies are added to my idli repertoire!
