Chana Dal Fara instructions

  1. Soak chana dal for about 5-6hrs.

  2. Prepare soft aata dough which includes (whole wheat grain,little bit of warm water, one spoon of ghee and a pinch of salt).

  3. One the dough is ready keep aside for about half an hour to rest..

  4. For preparing chana dal take a clean bowl put the soaked dal to it.Add giner,garlic,green chilli,some cumin seeds,black pepper,red chilli a pinch of turmeric (to give it a slight yellow colour as turmeric is optional)and add salt according to the taste..

  5. Mix all the ingredients to make it a coarse paste..

  6. One the paste is prepared make small balls of wheat dough..

  7. Roll the balls with a rolling pin and put chana dal paste on one side of the roti and cover with the other side.

  8. Likewise make all the fara like this.

  9. Once this process is done take a heating pan or culdron half filled water in it and bring that water to a boil.Once the water starts boiling put all the faras to it and let it steam for about 15-20minutes..

  10. After 20minutes u will see your fara is almost cooked..

  11. Rinse the water from the fara and keep all th faras over the cotton material cloth so that the cloth can absorb the rest water of the faras..

  12. After this the fara will get cool within 10minutes and the cloth will absorb the rest water of it.Cut in to small pieces..

  13. At last take a heating pan put a spoon of ghee and then add the small pieces of fara in the pan..

  14. Fry it until it gets crisp..

  15. Serve it hot..

Fara is a traditional snack from utter pradesh, specially from Lucknow and Kanpur, which is made from wheat flour, by filling chana dal paste along with spices. some time made from rice flour and urad dal also.

Dal ka Phara or Fara is a very popular snack if your visiting eastern Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.

The 'pithii' or the filling is made of 'chana dal' a.k.a split chick peas.

Alternatively, this filling can also be made with 'urad dal' a.k.a skinless white lentils.
