Ingredients of Moong Dal Appam

You need 1 cup of Yellow moong dal.

You need 1 tbsp of grated ginget.

It’s 2 of green chilli.

You need 1/4 cup of chopped onion.

Prepare 1 of medium sized tonmato finely chopped.

You need 2 tbsp of finely chopped coriander leaves.

Prepare 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder.

Soak the green/yellow moong dal for an hour; Grind coarsely with ginger, chilli & garlic; Add coriander, jeera powder, chat masala; If you want, add green peas or carrot; Add soda bi carbonate; Mix thoroughly stirring in one direction; Oil the appam vessel and put the batter.
Made with four different types of dals/lentils, this is a very healthy,high protein appetizer that's made in just a spoonful of oil.
Though its low fat, its definitely not lacking in flavor!
The tarka/tempering of mustard seeds,curry leaves and green chilies provides a boost of flavor.
Moong Dal Appam step by step

Soak the moong Dal for two hours then grind it with ginger and green chilli into a smooth batter and transfer into a bowl..

Now in the batter add all chopped veggies, baking powder, salt and spices and mix it well..

Heat the Appam pan and brush oil on the pan. Pour a spoonful of the batter in the pan and drizzle some oil from the top..

Flip them over and fry till golden brown. The hot Appam is ready to be served..
In all, five assorted husked dals / lentils are used for making these appams.
On fermenting this batter provides very soft appams.
