Muri ghonto. I remember having Muri Ghonto in marriages (mostly as part of lunch) when instead of catering Rannar thakur used to cook for the feast. The heads of the fishes procured for the main marriage feast used be utilized either in the form of Muri Ghonto, or Chanchra or Macher. Muri Ghonto with step wise photos and instructions.

Muri Ghonto is a traditional Assamese and Bengali recipe, and is very popular in these states.

You can have Muri ghonto using 22 ingredients and 15 steps. Here is how you achieve it.

Ingredients of Muri ghonto

  1. It’s 1 cup of Moong dal.

  2. It’s 1 of big Fish head.

  3. Prepare 2 of Chopped onions.

  4. You need 2 of Chopped tomatoes.

  5. It’s 1 tsp of Ginger paste.

  6. It’s 1 tsp of Garlic paste.

  7. You need 1 of Bay leaf.

  8. It’s 2-3 of Dried red chillies.

  9. It’s 1 tsp of Cumin seeds.

  10. You need 4-5 of Cardamom.

  11. It’s 3 of Cloves.

  12. Prepare 1 tsp of Turmeric powder.

  13. Prepare 1 tsp of Red chilli powder.

  14. Prepare 1 tsp of Coriander powder.

  15. Prepare 1 tsp of roasted Cumin powder.

  16. It’s 1 tsp of Garam masala.

  17. Prepare 2 tbsps of Oil.

  18. It’s 2 cups of Water.

  19. Prepare to taste of Salt.

  20. Prepare as needed of Coriander for garnish.

  21. It’s 2 of Potatoes (cubes).

  22. Prepare 1 tsp of Roasted cumin powder.

Cut tomato, onion and potato in small pieces.

Make pastes of ginger garlic, and green chili.

Muri ghonto ~ An authentic Bengali delicacy from the traditional kitchens of Bengal.

The Fish head or Muri (a.k.a Muro) of Rohu or Catla(Katla) fish is cooked with flavourful short grained Gobindobhog Rice.

Muri ghonto instructions

  1. Take a pan and roast the dal.Roast till you get the aroma.After that, soak the dal for 30 mins minimum..

  2. Now boil the dal.Add 1tsp salt..

  3. Clean the fish head carefully. Sprinkle and rub some salt and turmeric and red chilli powder and leave it for 20 mins..

  4. Now shallow fry the fish head until it turns golden brown..

  5. Fry the potatoes golden brown and keep aside..

  6. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan and add cumin seeds.Let them crackle.Add ginger garlic paste to it..

  7. Add onions.Saute it till it is transculent.

  8. Add bay leaf, dry red chillies,cardamom and cloves..

  9. Add potatoes to it.Make sure each piece gets coated well..

  10. Now add all the spices and salt into it.Fry for 1 minute or until raw smell is gone..

  11. Now add tomatoes.Cook till it is soft..

  12. Try to break the fried fish head into small pieces to avoid mess. Now add the pieces into the mixture..

  13. Add roasted cumin powder and garam masala into the mixture..

  14. Now add dal and give it a good stir.Add little water if it is required.Garnish with coriander..

  15. Enjoy Muri ghonto with steamed rice and salad..
