Batata vada. Batata vada is a popular Mumbai street food snack. In Marathi language 'potatoes' are called as 'batata' and 'vada' means a 'fried snack'. In South India, batata vada is known as Potato bonda. in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra this snack is called batata vada.

Batata translates to potato and vada to fried dumplings.

In short batata vada are potato vada made by dunking spiced potato balls in gram flour batter and deep fried.

Batata Vada Recipe - About Batata Vada Recipe: A popular snack from the streets of Maharashtra.

Batata translates into potato in English.

Mashed masaledar potatoes coated in a thick besan (chickpea flour) batter and deep fried till golden.

Served with a tangy chutney, batata vada is a street food delight tat you can easily prepare at home during the monsoon season or usually as an evening.

Batata vada step by step

  1. Boil the potatoes until soft peel & mash coarsely.

  2. Next prepare the tempering. Heat oil & add mustard seeds,jeera Whn they crackle, add the curry leaves followed by ginger, garlic & green chilles, chopped onion,haldi salt and add remaining ingredients.

  3. Mix well & cook for a few minutes being careful not to burn the tempering..

  4. Add the tempering to mashed potatoes.

  5. Divide the potatoes mixture into equal sized portions & make ball of that.

  6. Make a batter with the besan & other ingredients mentioned in the batter. Be sure to add water little at a time & check the consistency, so that the batter does not become too thin..

  7. Heat the oil for deep frying.

  8. When the oil is hot, dip each ball in the batter and deep fry until golden brown in colour.

  9. Serve hot with green peanut chutney.

  10. To make the green chutney, grind together all the ingredients for the chutney in a blender using minimum amount of water, till u get a smooth paste.

Batata Vada is now ready for serving.

Serve hot with tea and green chutney / tomato ketch up.

Tips and Variations: Mashed potato mixture will turn sticky if boiled potato has excessive moisture.

If mashed potato has excess moisture, cook it in a non-stick pan until excess moisture evaporates.

Transfer it to a bowl, let it cool for few minutes.
