Egyptian Eid cookies (Kahk). And no Egyptian feast is complete without Kahk. The lightly spiced crumbly cookie stuffed with sweet surprises and buried under copious amounts of powdered sugar. Other than the return of my beloved cup of morning coffee, there's nothing I associate the arrival of Eid more than the arrival of these cookies at my house.

These mouth watering cookies appear on the Egyptian Muslims' table yearly in Eid-el fitr that comes after Ramadan and bi-yealry on the Egyptian Christians' table in Christmas and Easter day.

Kahk pronounced as kh-ak are Egyptian festive cookies.

They are also eid cookies which are served on festivals like eid.

Kahk Cookies are eaten in Egypt for the end of Ramadan holiday called Eid'l Fitr.

They're sometimes even called Kahk al-Eid, cookies of the feast.

Egyptian Eid cookies (Kahk) step by step

  1. Mix flour, salt, sugar, yeast and cinnamon in a bowl. Add in sesame if using..

  2. Add in ghee, mix. Add water and mix until incorporated & consistent. Cover for an hour..

  3. Make filling in the meantime..

  4. Add ghee/butter on low heat, add flour. Cook until brownish..

  5. Add honey and all the other ingredients..

  6. Cook for a minute or 2. Put off heat and let it cool. It shouldnt be runny..

  7. Divide into portions..

  8. After an hour, divide dough into equal balls. (The cookies dont really rise so shape as you'd want to be.).

  9. Make a dent, put filling in, roll and stamp using a fork (optional)..

  10. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown..

  11. Sieve icing sugar on them after cooling for ganish..
