Recipe: Perfect Not so average sheppard pie Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Not so average sheppard pie. I encourage you to give this one a try. The not so shepherds pie is very labor intensive! Hope the rest of your recipes are a lot less time consuming and not using so many different pans.

But since I'm Scottish, I thought I'd give it a unique twist to suit my ancestral tastes.

The use of lamb, the smoky, heather taste of Guinness® Draught (Irish, I admit), and the topping of sharp Cheddar and smoked paprika give this version its unique, smoky-sweet flavor.

Shepherd's pie was not something I grew up eating.

I named it this because I used chicken instead of lamb, and I added my own mix of spices and seasonings.

A traditional shepherds pie is made with lamb, whilst a cottage pie is made using beef.

But the topping of both is the same: mashed potatoes!

A really good Shepherd's Pie should always start with a soffrito - that is, onion, garlic, carrots and celery sautéed on a lowish heat until sweet.

It's the secret to a great flavour base that's a technique used widely by many cuisines, such as Italian cooking (for example, this Italian Shredded Beef Ragu).

After this, we cook the ground / mince meat.

Add butter and oil to a large skillet on medium heat.
