Aval upma is the South Indian style of preparing poha and is a variation to the basic rava upma.

Ingredients of Aval upma

  1. You need 1 Cup of Aval (Poha).

  2. You need 1 Tablespoon of Oil.

  3. Prepare 1 Tablespoon of Mustard seeds.

  4. You need 1 Tablespoon of Urad dal.

  5. It’s 1 Tablespoon of Chana dal.

  6. It’s 1 of Red chilli.

  7. It’s 1 of Green chilli.

  8. Prepare to taste of Salt.

  9. You need of Turmeric powder.

  10. Prepare of Coconut (grated).

  11. You need of Curry leaves ( to garnish ).

Aval Upma is easy to prepare and delicious breakfast snack.

It is also famous as Poha Upma in many regions of India and it's made from flattened rice (beaten rice) which has all goodness of rice.

It is ideal food items for kid's lunch box and one of the most common breakfast recipes in India where rice is one of the main farm cultivation.

Aval upma instructions

  1. Preheat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds to it. When it splutters add urad dal, chana dal, red chillies and green chillies to it..

  2. Add tamarind water and asafoetida, salt and turmeric powder to it. Heat it till it turns into a thick consistency. Add the soaked aval(poha) to the above consistency and mix well..

  3. Add grated coconut and curry leaves to it and mix well..

Unlike Rava which has to be cooked, Aval doesn't need cooking.

All it needs is washing aval and setting aside for it to absorb the moisture and becomes soft but not mushy.

Once the aval is ready, we can toss it to the tempering and aval upma is ready in minutes.
