Doddapatre, also known as Big Thyme in English, Ajwain leaves in Hindi, Karpooravalli in Tamil, Owa in Marathi and Pani Koorka in Malayalam - is known to have a lot of medicinal values.

So thought about it and made akki rotti/rice flour rotti by using grated carrot (orange), sago & rice flour (white) and herbs like doddapatre/Indian borage, coriander, curry leaves and green chili paste (green), which automatically became tri colored !

So simple and easy, regular breakfast recipe turned into tri color … isn't it !!

Doddapatre is also known as Indian thyme/ Indian borage has thick fleshy leaves with a coarse texture.

Doddapatre Rice step by step

  1. Wash the doddapatre leaves and chop it. Now heat a oil in the pan and add mustard seeds. Once its splutter add groundnuts, urad dal, chana dal, Curry leaves and green chillies,salt and mix well. Make sure it's in medium flame to avoid leaves to over cooked..

  2. Now add rice into this masala. Stir well so that masala mix with rice properly. Now doddapatre rice is ready to serve..

It is used as a 'Mane Maddu' (meaning- common home grown medicine in Kannada).

It is widely used for making tambuli, chutney and also as a cough and cold relief.
