Though i have prepared khaman dhokla regularly as our snack for tea time, this rava dhokla is totally new to me until i tried on my own a month before. I have seen this dhokla recipe in blogsphere a lot and i don't know why i haven't tried such a simple and tasty dish so far.

Adding veggies to this dish makes it even more nutritious.

The texture when cooked right should be similar to the South Indian delicacy Idli - Soft and Spongy.

A popular Gujarati dish, dhokla or steamed savory cake, comes in many different variations and flavors.

This recipe uses semolina also known as rava or sooji/suji, hence the name Rava Dhokla or Sooji Dhokla.

This dhokla is also known as White Dhokla.

Dhokla is a farsan (snack) from Gujarati cuisine.

Rava Dhokla/White Dhokla/Rava Steamed Cake step by step

  1. Firstly, crush ginger and green chillies and set aside..

  2. Take rava in a bowl, add the curd. Add the crushed ginger and green chillies..

  3. Add salt and sugar and mix it well..

  4. Add water and make it as thick batter..

  5. Cover the bowl with lid and keep it aside for 30 minutes..

  6. After 30 minutes, add lemon juice and eno salt. It will become frothy. Mix it well together..

  7. Now take a cake tin and grease it well with oil and pour the rava batter into it..

  8. Steam it in the steamer for about 8-10 minutes or cook until the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean..

  9. Flip the tin upside down on the plate and tap gently. The dhokla will come out easily. Cut into desired shape..

  10. Allow it to cool a bit. In the meantime, prepare the tempering for the dhokla. Heat oil in a small tadka pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle. Add asafoetida and green chillies. Add this tempering on the top of the dhokla. Garnish with coriander leaves..

  11. Serve the rava dhokla with coriander-mint chutney..

It is a savory steamed cake prepared with fermented batter.

The most popular and well known dhokla is khaman dhokla.

However, there are many varieties of dhoklas prepared in Gujarat and sooji dhokla or rava dhokla or semolina dhokla is one of them.
