Chemmeen Theeyal(prawns curry). Prawns curry (Chemmeen Theeyal) is one of the best theeyals prepared by my mom along with another recipe which I posted long time back, ulli theeyal. This recipe is also my mom's best preparation with prawns too. We as kids always devoured more rice that day whenever this dish was prepared.

Chemmeen Theeyal or Prawns Theeyal is a prawns preparation with roasted coconut gravy.

It is a good accompaniment with rice..

Add this to the prepared prawns theeyal.

Ingredients of Chemmeen Theeyal(prawns curry)

  1. Prepare 1 cup of shallots chopped.

  2. You need 1 kg of prawns.

  3. You need 1/2 cup of coconut grated.

  4. It’s of tamarind lemon sized ball.

  5. It’s 1/2 tbsp of ginger garlic paste.

  6. You need 4 tbsps of Coconut Oil -.

  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp of pepper.

  8. Prepare 1/2 tsp of mustard.

  9. Prepare 1 of curry leaves - stalk.

  10. You need 5 of green chilli -.

  11. You need 1 of corriander powder tbss.

  12. It’s 1/4 tsp of turmeric.

  13. Prepare 1/2 tsp of chilli powder.

  14. It’s 1 tsp of salt.

Chemmeen theeyal is ready for serving.

Chemmeen Theeyal(prawns curry) step by step

  1. 1)Cook prawns in a cup of water along with salt and turmeric powder.2)When cooked, add tamarind pulp soaked in around 1 cup of water.3)Heat oil in a pan 4)Splutter mustard seeds.5)Add curry leaves,small onions, green chilies, ginger and garlic and fry, till the onions turn light brown.6)Add the above into the prawns.7)Heat up a pan.8)Add coconut, small onions, pepper  and fry well.9)When the coconut turns light brown, take the pan off the fire.10)Add chilly powder, coriander powder and saute….

It is an aromatic curry with the combination of roasted coconut, coriander seeds, dried red chili and fenugreek seeds etc.

Bring to a boil and add the prawns, curry leaves.

Cover with a lid and cook until the prawns are done and the gravy is semi-thick.

Heat a tsp of coconut oil in another pan and add sliced shallots and curry leaves.

Brown the shallots and pour over the prawn theeyal.
